BURNOUT
Beauty can arise from ashes, just as hearts can regenerate after burnout.
1.65 x 1.16 m 'street art' style painting of the Nissan Skyline burning

Why a fire of roses?

“On a huge hearth a great fire was burning, and the fire was a huge heap of roses, and yet it was a fire.
The smell of the roses filled the air, and the heat of the flames of them glowed on his face”
― George Macdonald, The Princess and Curdie

In The Princess and Curdie, the miner's son Curdie is asked to plunge his arms into the small fragrant fire of roses burning in Irene's Grandmother's room. The pain is unbearable, but he is steadfast. Once his arms cease to hurt she tells him to withdraw them, and he now finds that when he grasps the hand of a stranger, he is able to see into their true nature, whether good or evil. It is a great protection to him on his journey.
Picture
This photo was taken by a neighbour to let police know about the stolen car dumped at McKellar oval in early January. The 1988 Nissan Skyline was in good condition and had clearly been cared for by its owner over the years. The next morning it had been completely incinerated. The below slideshow tells the story of the car over the 6 or so weeks it was at the oval where it prompted conversation among locals walking dogs and playing with children, until it was finally towed away.

Hire Car
by John Cooper Clarke

Double park – don’t lock the door
Push the pedals through the floor
Give it loads and then some more
It’s a hire car baby

Grip the stick – grind the gears
Watch that distance disappear
Never yours in a thousand years
It’s a hire car baby

Hire-car, hire-car
Why would anybody buy a car?
Bang it, prang it, say ta ta
It’s a hire car baby

Bad behaviour on the street
Save yourself a couple of sheets
Collision rate keeps it sweet
It’s a hire car baby

Show this motor no respect
Bump it, dump it, call collect
What else do the firm expect
It’s a hire car baby

Drive the fucker anywhere
Just like you don’t care
Put it down to wear and tear
It’s a hire car baby

Pray the person who hired it last
Didn’t drive it quite so fast
This dakarum dodgem doesn’t last
It’s a hire car baby

Try not to kill yourself
Or injure anybody else
Don’t forget to fasten your belts

Rent it, dent it, bang it, prang it
Bump it, dump it, scorch it, torch it
Crash and burn it, don’t return it
Lost deposit, let ’em earn it
Who cares, it’s on the firm
It’s a hire car baby
