Why a fire of roses?
“On a huge hearth a great fire was burning, and the fire was a huge heap of roses, and yet it was a fire.
The smell of the roses filled the air, and the heat of the flames of them glowed on his face”
― George Macdonald, The Princess and Curdie
In The Princess and Curdie, the miner's son Curdie is asked to plunge his arms into the small fragrant fire of roses burning in Irene's Grandmother's room. The pain is unbearable, but he is steadfast. Once his arms cease to hurt she tells him to withdraw them, and he now finds that when he grasps the hand of a stranger, he is able to see into their true nature, whether good or evil. It is a great protection to him on his journey.
